Hi there, I'm Kelsey! Thanks for stopping by my little corner of the Internet.
I know firsthand how guilt, shame, and anxiety can take a toll on your well-being and sense of self. Those experiences of self-discovery inspired me to become a therapist - giving people the space and support they need to heal and grow.
I enjoy working with people of all genders and sexual orientations who are adults 18 years or older. I specialize in sex and trauma therapy, particularly helping those who are healing from relational trauma, anxiety, loneliness, and who are experiencing sex-related concerns.
As a sex, couples, and individual therapist with Shifting Tides Psychotherapy, my deepest goal is to create a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where clients can explore their challenges and discover their strengths within a collaborative environment.
I hold a BA in Psychology from the University of Florida (Go Gators! 🐊) and an MSW from Hunter College, where I honed my trauma-informed and sex-positive approach to therapy. I’ve also received specific training in EMDR, IFS, and sex and couples therapy to better serve my clients’ diverse needs.
Outside of therapy, you can find me reading, enjoying a latte, or exploring the Hudson Valley with my partner, two dogs, and cat.
Let’s connect and work together to help you build the life and relationships you deserve.

What is sex therapy?
Sex therapy is a specialized form of talk therapy that focuses on addressing challenges related to sexuality, intimacy, and relationships. It provides a safe, judgment-free space to explore issues like desire, arousal, orgasm, sexual identity, performance concerns, and the emotional or relational dynamics tied to your sexual well-being. Through open conversation, education, and therapeutic techniques, sex therapy helps individuals and couples navigate these topics, fostering deeper understanding, pleasure, and fulfillment.
What a session might entail:
Talk therapy
Psychoeducation
Parts Work (Internal Family Systems)
EMDR for individuals processing sexual concerns that are connected to trauma, fear, or shame
Sex therapy is about creating a space where you can discuss concerns openly, build confidence in your sexual self, and work toward meaningful, positive change in your relationships and overall erotic wellbeing.
It really depends on your needs and goals!
If your concerns primarily involve your personal experiences, feelings, or challenges related to sexuality or intimacy, seeing a sex therapist on your own can be helpful. This allows you to explore topics like sexual identity, past trauma, or personal struggles with desire, arousal, or confidence in a focused, individual setting.
If your concerns involve dynamics within your relationship(s), like communication challenges, mismatched desire, trust issues, or intimacy struggles, bringing your partner(s) to therapy can be a great option. Couples or relationship-focused sex therapy creates a collaborative space to work through these issues together and foster deeper connection and understanding.
Clients may start therapy individually and later choose to bring their partner(s) into sessions, or vice versa. I’m happy to help you decide what approach feels best for your situation during an initial consultation. Whether you come alone or with your partner(s), therapy is about supporting you in achieving your goals and building healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
People seek sex therapy for a variety of reasons, including both personal and relational concerns.
Common reasons include:
Desire and intimacy issues: Struggling with mismatched libido, loss of intimacy, or difficulty connecting with a partner.
Performance concerns: Anxiety or challenges with arousal, orgasm, or erectile function.
Pain or discomfort during sex: Addressing conditions like pelvic pain, vaginismus, or other physical concerns impacting sexual experiences.
Sexual identity exploration: Navigating questions about sexual orientation, fantasies, or gender identity.
Past trauma: Healing from sexual trauma or negative experiences that affect current relationships or sexual well-being.
Communication challenges: Learning to talk openly about desires, boundaries, and expectations with a partner.
Alternative dynamics: Exploring consensual non-monogamy, BDSM, kink, or other non-traditional relationship structures.
Sex therapy isn’t just for people experiencing significant challenges—it can also be a space for personal growth, enhancing intimacy, or building a deeper understanding of your sexual self. Everyone’s journey is unique, and sex therapy is tailored to meet your individual or relational needs.
EMDR and IFS are both evidence-based modalities that can assist individuals with processing trauma. Here is a little more information about each of them:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach to help individuals process and heal from traumatic memories and other distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on the brain's natural ability to reprocess information and reduce emotional distress.
During EMDR therapy, clients briefly recall a specific distressing memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or audio tones. This process helps the brain "digest" the memory, reducing its emotional charge and reframing negative beliefs associated with it.
EMDR is effective for treating trauma, PTSD, anxiety, phobias, and other issues. It helps clients move from feeling "stuck" in their past to a place of greater clarity, resilience, and emotional freedom. It's not about forgetting what happened but about transforming the way the memory affects you in the present.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that helps individuals understand and heal the different "parts" of themselves. It’s based on the idea that our minds are made up of distinct parts, each with its own thoughts, emotions, and roles. For example, you might have a part that’s critical of yourself, another part that protects you from pain, and another that carries hurt or shame.
IFS sees these parts as natural and important, even when they seem conflicting or unhelpful. The goal of IFS therapy is to help you connect with your Self—your core, compassionate, and calm inner being. From this place of Self, you can build a healthier relationship with your parts, helping them heal and work together more harmoniously.
IFS is often used to address trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges by promoting self-compassion, emotional balance, and inner clarity. It’s a journey of understanding and integrating all aspects of yourself, creating greater inner peace and resilience.
I do not currently take insurance. However, I do work with Out-of-Network benefits via Mentaya. You can check if you are eligible for reimbursement by clicking here.
I work with adult individuals and couples of all genders, sexual orientations, relationship structures, and racial and ethnic identities. My goal is to create a safe, culturally-competent, inclusive, and non-judgmental space where anyone can explore their concerns and work toward their goals.
Whether you’re navigating intimacy challenges, exploring your sexual identity, or strengthening your relationships, my approach is tailored to meet your unique needs and experiences. Everyone is welcome.
Not at all! While I specialize in sex therapy, I am also an individual therapist who works with clients on a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, shame, trauma, and relationship challenges.
If sex or intimacy isn’t something you want to focus on, that’s completely okay. Our sessions will be guided by your goals, and we’ll work on whatever feels most important to you. Therapy is your space to explore and grow at your own pace.
